- Governor Boosts National Guard Fire Response
Another 200 National Guard ground troops will join its aerial mutual aid assets in battling the swarm of lightning fires burning throughout much of Northern California. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has ordered the National Guard personnel to provide personnel for hand crews, transportation and command and control support. More than 1,700 fires have been sparked in California over the last month, consuming more than 520,000 acres.

- 63-Year-Old Volunteer FF Collapses at Mendocino Fire
As the battle continues to rage against a rash of devastating wildland fires, a 63-year-old volunteer firefighter for the Anderson Valley Fire Department has died on the lines. Robert Roland, a retired aerospace executive, collapsed while helping to lay hose line at a fire complex near Philo. He died later at an area hospital. Roland is the second California firefighter to have died after battling the blazes -- Newport Beach FF Kevin Pryor died of a brain hemorrhage less than a day after returning from the Humboldt Fire.

- Hundreds Mourn Fallen So. Marin FF in San Rafael
Nearly 1,000 people came together in San Rafael Tuesday to remember Southern Marin FD Deputy Chief Jeff Powers. The loyal member of Marin Professional Firefighters Local 1775 died June 26th of a heart attack while on duty at the firehouse.

- Fallen Newport Beach FF Kevin Pryor Honored at Tuesday Memorial
Fallen Newport Beach Firefighter Kevin Pryor was remembered Tuesday as a "Renaissance man" whose devotion to his job was enriched by a love of history and a gift for impressions. Pryor died June 15th shortly after returning from the Humboldt Fire. He was remembered by friends and fellow firefighters at a Memorial Service in Westlake Village.

- SB 1296 - Public Employment Relations Board
Senator Ellen Corbett (D - San Leandro) has introduced CPF-sponsored legislation that would provide equal footing for all public safety personnel in unfair labor disputes. Specifically, SB 1296, would clarify that parties who are subject to the Public Employment Relations Board's (PERB) jurisdiction over the resolution of unfair labor practice charges and representation disputes, may also timely proceed to court in order to exercise their statutory rights that exist under alternate dispute resolution procedures.

- AB 2754 - MRSA Presumption
Assemblywoman Karen Bass (D - Los Angeles) has introduced CPF-sponsored legislation that would add Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) to the list of existing disputable presumptions that are afforded to public safety personnel for workers' compensation purposes. Specifically, AB 2754, clarifies that when a firefighter or other specified public safety officer contracts MRSA it is presumed to have been contracted in the course of his or her employment or service.

- SB 1338 - Predesignation Sunset Repeal
SB 1338 is now on it's way to the Assembly Appropriations Committee for consideration.Senator Carole Midgen (D - San Francisco) has introduced CPF co-sponsored legislation to maintain the right of some injured workers, including firefighters, to predesignate their treating physicians and see their own doctors if they get injured on the job. This legislation, SB 1338, would eliminate the current 2009 date on which the right to predesignated is scheduled to sunset.

- Thousands on Front Lines as Fire Siege Enters 3rd Week
An ever-growing wave of lightning-sparked wildland fires continues to consume structures and acreage from Kern County to the Oregon Border. As of June 30 (AM), nearly 1,500 separate lightning fires were burning in Northern California, consuming upwards of 400,000 acres and leaving much of the North State in a smoky haze. Thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes, and nearly 20,000 firefighters are on the front lines battling the blazes.
