CPF Convention: Future of Profession At Stake in Governor’s Race
While delegates elected CPF’s officers, the election on most delegates’ mind was the one in November … especially the race for governor.
Attorney General Jerry Brown – CPF’s endorsed candidate for governor – was warmly received during his featured address at the convention. During two previous terms as governor, Brown signed the nation’s first firefighter cancer presumption law. He also signed legislation creating the California Fire Fighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee.
“Jerry Brown has been standing up for firefighters, and for public safety, before most of us even joined the fire service,” said CPF President Lou Paulson. “If he had done nothing else but sign the cancer presumption law, he would still have earned our support.”

Brown’s unmatched record of standing up for firefighters and their families stood out in stark contrast to his likely opponent in the November campaign.
Over the past month, billionaire candidate Meg Whitman has gone on the attack against the retirement security of firefighters, police and other public employees. Echoing Governor Schwarzenegger’s ill-fated 2005 “reform” agenda,
“Wall Street” Whitman’s plan would dramatically roll back the hard-earned retirement security of all public workers and muzzle your strong, united voice. She has also indicated a desire to "outsource" vital services.
“The stakes are as high as they’ve ever been,” said Alameda City Firefighters President Dom Weaver. “Whitman combines a hostile, anti-employee agenda with a bottomless checkbook, and that is bad news, not just for us but for all working Californians.”
