Governor Signs Bill to Extend Income Tax Check-Off for CA Fire Foundation

Assemblyman Juan Arambula (D - Fresno)

The Governor recently signed into law CPF-supported legislation, AB 1812, authored by Assemblyman Juan Arambula (D - Fresno).  This important measure, which will extend the existing sunset on the California Fire Foundation's income tax check-off from 2011 to 2016, received unanimous approval from the Legislature and was given the green light by Governor Schwarzenegger when he signed it into law on July 21st. (Chapter 160, Statutes of 2008).

For over 15 years, the California Fire Foundation has been at the center of our state's commitment to honor the sacrifice of firefighters who have fallen in the line of duty.  The Foundation spent nearly a decade raising funds for the construction of the California Firefighters Memorial located in Capitol Park, and since it's unveiling in 2001, has continued to fund regular maintenance and repair.  The Foundation also conducts annual ceremonies honoring the memory of fallen firefighters and assisting surviving loved ones.  A portion of the money raised by the Foundation comes from taxpayers who are allowed to make voluntary contributions each year via the Foundation's state personal income tax check-off.

This income tax check-off program plays a key role in the success of the Fire Foundation and is an essential part of ensuring that it is able to continue honoring California's fallen firefighters.  Extending the sunset from 2011 to 2016 will give the Foundation a crucial source of funding for the Firefighters Memorial and continue to offer all Californians the opportunity to honor those firefighters who have given their lives in the line of duty, protecting the citizens and property of this state.
