The Butte Lightning Complex is spread out over dozens of miles, and forces firefighters to tackle rough terrain. Local 2881 members responding to the Butte Lightning Complex received a visit from L. 2881 President Robert Wolf last week, as they prepped for another long night.

In early June, LA County Firefighters Local 1014 traveled to Sacramento to outfit five new OES Type 3 engines -- the first to be deployed in their department. The engines are among 15 approved for deployment to aid in responding to fires and other emergencies.

Forty years after they were taken, LA City firefighter Harold Burba's photos of the aftermath from the Robert F. Kennedy assassination have been released. The photos were first published in the May-June edition of the Los Angeles Firefighter, the newspaper for United Firefighters of Los Angeles City, Local 112.

On April 12, 2008, hundreds of would-be firefighters got a chance to learn about the rewards and challenges of a career in the fire service at the 2nd Annual CFFJAC Firefighter Recruitment Fair. Held at the California Firefighter CPAT Center in Orange, the event drew more than 300 people.

Read MoreThe second of two CFFJAC Firefighter Recruitment Fairs was held April 19, 2008 at the CPAT Center in Dublin, near Pleasanton. More than 200 prospective firefighters turned up to meet with recruitment officials from more than 20 departments, and try their hand at the eight elements of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT).
