Firefighter Voice Rings Loud and Clear in Nov. 4 Election Results

California Professional Firefighters and its affiliates proved once again that the issues that matter to first responders are issues that resonate with the state's voters.

In a year with a record election turnout, CPF-endorsed candidates have won or are leading in all but three of the 91 Assembly and Senate contests in which we made a recommendation -- a whopping 97% success rate!

Another candidate is trailing by about 1,000 votes with more than 40,000 absentee and provisional ballots yet to be counted.

In addition to CPF's success in legislative contests, firefighters also helped lead the defeat of Proposition 6 -- a ballot measure that could have diverted millions away from vital services such as fire protection to bankroll law enforcement programs that would not guarantee any additional officers on the street.

"The people of California have made it clear that the priorities of first responders are their priorities," said CPF President Lou Paulson. "We're proud of our bipartisan endorsement list and look forward to working with firefighter-friendly majorities during what promises to be a challenging and difficult year ahead."

CPF local affiliates are also checking in with their own success stories, as voters sided with firefighters on dozens of candidate and ballot measure issues.

Among the most noteworthy accomplishments was the defeat of San Diego City Attorney Michael Aguirre -- one of the most hostile anti-retirement, anti-firefighter public officials in California.

The firefighter impact was also felt in Los Angeles County, with the election of one of CPF's best friends in Sacramento -- Sen. Mark Ridley-Thomas -- as a Los Angeles County supervisor. Los Angeles County Firefighters Local 1014 helped spearhead an imposing labor coalition in support of Ridley-Thomas that helped him to a decisive victory over LA Councilman Bernard Parks.
