California Professional Firefighters (CPF) is seeking a Publications Editor for its Sacramento based statewide organization. CPF is the largest statewide organization dedicated exclusively to serving the needs of career firefighters.

The Publications Editor is a key position in developing and executing communications programs and strategies for CPF and its affiliated organizations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work together with all departments and affiliated organizations to build and enhance communications efforts including social media presence;
  • Collaborate in organizing, prioritizing and executing communications projects, in close coordination with President and key staff;
  • Editor, The California Professional Firefighter: CPF quarterly membership newspaper. Primary responsibility for reporting, writing and overseeing production in coordination with in-house print shop;
  • Editor, www.cpf.org & www.cffjac.org: Manage content on CPF & CFFJAC web sites and coordinate with legislative department to enhance legislative Web presence; writing, illustration, posting and formatting in a timely manner;
  • Collaborate with CPF Managing Director and CFFJAC Program Director in planning and delivery of other principal communication products, including membership newspaper, annual report, brochures, internal membership communications (electronic and printed);
  • Team up with Communications Director and video production studio on development of internal communication projects;
  • Coordinate with Communications Director as needed with development and distribution of external communications;
  • Additional duties as assigned.


Skills

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, comfortable with a variety of communication styles (broadcast, print, web). Strong proofreading skills;
  • Understanding of state government and the legislative process, as well as an understanding of state and local politics;
  • Work cooperatively in a team-oriented environment. Self-starter with ability to coordinate multiple projects and be able to organize complex projects and set priorities in order to meet deadlines;
  • Function well under pressure and be a creative problem solver.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with communications and/or journalism emphasis;
  • Minimum of three years experience in public relations or communications, including experience covering/working in state politics or government;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and photo-editing tools; understanding and comfort with web-based communications and content-management techniques;
  • Familiarity with/understanding of organized labor, state and local politics and the legislative process.


Compensation Package
